The Wagner Society of Dallas will host a reception and provide refreshments after the performance. WSD members who attend are requested to bring a light snack to share. *

Red Carnations (for grades 5-12) is a one-act opera, composed by Robert Baksa. Based on a play by Glenn Hughes, Red Carnations was commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Metropolitan Opera Studio. It was the featured opera for the 2004 apprentice tours by the Santa Fe Opera Company. Cast for soprano, tenor, and baritone, Red Carnations tells the story of a young lady and young man who meet each other at a costume party. They arrange to meet again the next day at a park. Using red carnations for identification, the young lady decides to play a trick on the young man in order to ease her father's apprehension.

Red Carnations has been performed dozens of times as an introduction to opera for young people. The Minikin Opera of Maryland, which toured the piece for two seasons, called the work "a wonderful introduction to opera for all ages." The piece was originally composed for voices and piano but a version for chamber orchestra was premiered by the Orchestra of St. Luke's which created the Children's Free Opera of New York program to feature the work.  In the Spring of 2004 the work was the featured opera in the Santa Fe Opera apprentice tours.

"Red Carnations" is scheduled as the touring opera in the Spring of 2006 in a program co-sponsored by the Dallas Opera and Southern Methodist University.

Please call 214-363-6070 if you plan to attend and bring a snack.

THE COLD WAR SOPRANO

Many Wagner Society of Dallas members fondly remember Sheila Jones Harms, who was an active member of the organization, and who presented many interesting programs and recitals over the years.

Now, WSD member Ed Flaspoehler has completed his biography of Sheila, called The Cold War Soprano: Memoirs of a Singer-Spy.

If you are interested in opera and fine singing, Sheila's biography will surely be of interest to you. Not only will you get an inside glimpse of what it takes to become an opera singer, and learn about the world of opera in Post- WWII Vienna, but, because Sheila and her husband Werner, were also CIA agents, you will get a look at the Cold War from a personal point of view.

You can get a copy of Ed's book on the internet at Lulu.com
